Highlights from the "AI & Media" Masterclass: CeSIA and Reporters Without Borders bring experts and journalists together with Yoshua Bengio

On the sidelines of the AI Action Summit, the Centre pour la Sécurité de l'IA (CeSIA) was pleased to co-organize an event with Reporters Without Borders (RSF) dedicated to the risks of artificial intelligence.

On February 6, in the prestigious Salle des Actes at the École Normale Supérieure - Ulm, we brought together a distinguished group of journalists from France's leading media outlets for an exclusive meeting with Yoshua Bengio, Turing Award winner and a world-renowned figure in AI safety.

A Masterclass for well-informed journalism

The first part of the event, titled "AI, Science, and Media," was designed as a unique forum to equip information professionals. The goal was to foster media coverage of AI-related risks that reflects the current state of scientific knowledge. Discussions focused on:

  • The industry's breakneck progress and its implications.
  • The systemic and informational risks that AI poses to our societies.
  • The immense challenges of regulating a constantly evolving sector.

Launch of the first global report on AI safety

The masterclass was followed by a highly anticipated press conference, during which Yoshua Bengio presented the findings of the first-ever International AI Safety Report.

Considered the AI equivalent of the IPCC's reports on climate change, this landmark document has major international backing, including from 30 countries, the OECD, the UN, and the European Union. Its publication marks a turning point in the collective recognition of the threats posed by advanced AI and in the international coordination to address these risks.

The success of this event demonstrated the growing interest among media professionals in this critical issue. We were honored to welcome representatives from newsrooms such as AFP, Les Échos, France TV, Mediapart, Politico, Le Point, L'Express, La Tribune, TV5 Monde, Usbek & Rica, ActuIA, and Contexte.

CeSIA extends its warmest thanks to Reporters Without Borders for this fruitful partnership, to Yoshua Bengio for his time and invaluable insights, to ENS Ulm for its hospitality, and to all the journalists who attended for the insightful discussions.
